Monday, June 18, 2007 Derek Jeter by Patrick Derek Jeter was born June 26, 1974 in Pequannock, New Jersey. He was a big Yankees fan. He wanted to play shortstop for them. Jeter worked hard and got good grades. Jeter’s favorite sport was baseball. He hardly ever struck out! He was a great fielder too! Jeter threw 92 MPR to first base. He grew up and is now a shortstop for the New York Yankees. After his first year with the Yankees, he founded The Turn Two Foundation. The Turn Two Foundation is a group of people that helped kids turn away from drugs. Jeter sometimes could not find his glove in the mess of letters youngsters sent. In 2003, Derek Jeter wrote a book called The Life You Imagine. To learn more about Derek Jeter, I suggest you read it and many other books about Derek Jeter. Questions Patrick would ask Derek Jeter Bethany Hamilton by Mairead Bethany was a believer. How would you stay calm if a shark attacked you? But she did stay clam. She believed in God and did not care if he killed her. Pretend you are surfing on a Halloween morning in Hawaii and a tiger shark attacks you. Then you found out that you might not be able to do the sport you love. Sad? Angry? For her it was both. And that’s what happened to Bethany. She believed that if she worked hard she might surf again. She was right. Bethany was inspiring in that way. You can read more about 13 year old Bethany Hamilton in Soul Surfer. You might find out that she had two brothers and liked chocolate. And you’ll probably learn more cool stuff. What would you ask Bethany Hamilton? by Mairead

He proved that he would change the world so that black people got to play baseball. When Jackie was little his mother made him a rag ball. Jackie liked it so much that sometimes he talked to it. Jackie named his rag ball “Rags.” After a little while, Jackie made believe he was a big league player. Jackie hit his ball with a stick, and the ball split apart. Bits and pieces of colored cloth exploded out of it and scattered everywhere. This man named, Branch Rickey, told Jackie that he needed a player that had the courage to not fight back. Jackie knew that people would call him names. But he said “O.K.” They shook hands. Branch asked Jackie if he had a special friend. Jackie said. “ I sure do. She a great girl, and her name is Rachel.” Jackie then said they planned on getting married soon. On Jackie’s first game, the other team put a black cat on the field and said “Hey Jackie, here’s your cousin. He’s black too.” Jackie got so mad, but he remembered what Branch said. “ I’m looking for a player with enough courage to not fight back.” I chose Jackie Robinson because I am really interested in baseball. I am also interested in how he broke the color barrier. I am proud that he broke the color barrier. I know it was hard to for him.
